The Expendables has topped the US box office for a second weekend, although to be honest, that’s more as a result of a raft of new movies failing to ignite audience interest, rather than because Stallone’s action opus is doing remarkable business.
There were five new entries in the top 10, with the highest coming in at number 2, with the Twilight spoof, Vampires Suck, taking $12.2 million over the weekend and $18.5 million since its release last Wednesday. It’s a decent opening, but nothing like the business spoofs were doing a couple of years ago. The next highest new entry was the African-American skewing Lottery Ticket at number 4 with $11.1 million. However it was the two films that on the surface seemed the biggest releases that disappointed the most.
Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3D limped home in sixth place with $10 million in its first weekend, while the Jennifer Aniston comedy, The Switch, could only make it to number 8, with $8.1 million. Indeed Aniston’s film was just beaten by the first weekend of Nanny McPhee Returns (known as Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang over here), which took $8.3 million to place seventh on the chart.
Equally the much trumpeted Scott Pilgrim continued its disappointing run, dropping to $5.3 million and 10th on the box offfice chart in only its second weekend. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 21st-23rd.
