Angelina Jolie may like to kick ass in commercial movies likes Salt, but she’s also one of those actresses who every couple of years like to take on something weighty and political, to show she has deeper concerns. And it appears she’s about to do just that, as over the weekend it’s emerged she planning to make a movie set during the 1992-95 Bosnian War.
The news emerged in a statement issued Saturday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, for whom she is a goodwill ambassador. At the time Jolie was making a surprise visit to Sarajevo, to meet with members of Bosnia’s interethnic presidency to discuss ways to help thousands of returning war refugees (I know, I still find the idea of movie stars doing this sort of thing odd, too). However while I said she like to do weighty, she was keen to stress, “The film is a love story, not a political statement.”
However there were few details other than that, except that it will feature actors from the various ethnicities of the former Yugoslavia, and should start shooting this autumn. However, while Reuters reports on the film itself, Filmofilia says they have a source that suggets the movie will be Jolie’s directorial debut, and that she’ll also take the lead female role.
They also suggest that Rade Serbedzija (Fugitive Pieces) will co-star. As yet nothing is set in stone – despite the movie being announced, it doesn’t even appear that it’s fully funded yet – but it’ll be interesting if Jolie does use it to step behind the camera.
