Sony has already found their new Spider-man in the form of Andrew Garfield, and now it’s time to get him a love interest. THR has the shortlist of actresses who will be meeting Garfield and director Marc Webb over the next few days, in the hope of finding a female lead. However perhaps the most surprising news is that they’re not looking for a Mary-Jane, which had been the presumption seeing at the Spider-man reboot take Peter Park back to high school.
Although it’s not known exactly what the role will be, THR speculates is could be for Gwen Stacy, Parker’s other love interest, who was played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Spider-man 3, or perhaps a brand new character.
So who’s on the shortlist? Well, there’s Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later, Centurion), Ophelia Lovibond (Nowhere Boy, 4321), Lilly Collins (The Blind Side), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) and Emma Roberts (Scream 4, 4321). Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim) was also said to be in the running, but has apparently now dropped out. However it appears Robert’s may be in the lead at the moment, as she’s apparently been flown from the Scream 4 set twice for meetings.
THR notes though that it’s still fairly early in the process, and we shouldn’t rule out Webb and the producers casting their net wider if they don’t find people they particularly like in this set of meetings.
