Zac Efron may have dropped out of Footloose because he said he didn’t want to do any more musicals for a while, but it appears he’s changed as mind, as THR reports that he has his eye on the lead role in a film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Memphis. However it appears he may have some competition, as Justin Timberlake is also said to be interested.
They both have a bit of a problem though, as at the moment no film version has been announced, even though there are vague reports Oliver Stone is interested in directing, due to a meeting he took with one of the show’s writers, Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan (it’s also Stone who’s said to particularly want Timberlake). It’s also believed Efron took Hairspray director Adam Shankman to see the Brodway show, suggesting the actor could be interested in getting him to helm a film version.
If the rumours are true, Efron and Timberlake are both interested in the role of 50s-era radio DJ Huey Calhoun, who champions rock ‘n’ roll music in the 1950s, and develops a relationship with a talented African-American singer in the deeply segregated South.
