With Daniel Craig already installed in the lead male role in David Fincher’s English-language version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, there’s been a lot of speculation as to who will play the female lead of Lisbeth Salander. Earlier today, the NY Post was saying it was down to Lea Seydoux, Rooney Mara and Scarlet Johansson, but that the role was still open.
However it seems Fincher and co. have made their decision and according to THR they’ve gone with 25-year-old Rooney Mara, who’s biggest role so far was in the Nightmare On Elm Street remake, although she was also in Youth In Revolt and will soon be seen in The Social Network. It seem she must have done well in the latter, as Fincher directed her in that, and now wants her to take the complex role of the damaged hacker, Lisbeth Salanader, who goes from victim to warrior.
It’s one of the most coveted female roles in recent years, not just because of its complexity and the popularity of the book, but also because it’s the first part of a planned trilogy. FIncher also talking to the likes of Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Ellen Page and Mia Wasikowska, as well as numerous others, about it, beofre decising on Mara.
The plot of the film, based of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling book, is about disgraced, jail-bound journalist Mikeal Blomkvist (Craig), who is hired to look into a 40-year-old possible murder, which takes him and tattooed computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Mara) into the world of the dysfunctional, island-bound Vanger family. Robin Wright and Stellan Skarsgard have also been cast, with shooting due to begin in Sweden next month.
