There’s little doubt that having a famous parent is a big help in Hollywood, although it’s difficult to know how much it played a part in helping Max Landis (son of American Werewolf direct John), to sell his new script, Chronicles, to 20th Century Fox.
THR says that ‘the story focuses on the lives of three Portland teens that become exposed to a mysterious substance in the woods, and, as a result, begin to develop incredible powers. They work together to hone their skills for fun, until personal and family problems begin to turn them against one another.’
However while that sounds pretty generic, the plan is for the film to be shot in the hand-held, documentary style of Cloverfield (which should also keep the budget low). The script comes with a director attached, first-timer Josh Trank. While the fact his biggest gig to date is as editor of Big Fan, may not inspire much confidence, he is the son of Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Richard Trank, so hopefully he’s got the Cloverfield style in his blood.
