Last week, when it looked like he was about to sign on to direct the John Grisham thriller, The Associate, I mentioned that Tony Scott and his brother Ridley seemed to be in a competition to see how many films it’s physically possible to attach themselves to as director, even though there’s no chance they’ll have time to make them all. Well more evidence of that has emerged with Deadline reporting that Tony is attached to direct a film based on Miles Millar’s Nemesis.
Wanted and Kick-ass creator Millar had previously mentioned Guy Ritchie and Sam Raimi as possible directors of the film version of his graphic novel, but now it seems Scott has got the job. The tale is about Matt Anderson, a billionaire genius whos the worlds greatest fighter, and who is bent on avenging the death of his beloved father, whose suicide because of the actions of Agent Blake Morrow, as well as his mother’s subsequent death, sent Anderson over the edge and on a course to becoming a super-villain. Wanting Morrow dead, Nemesis kidnaps the President Of The United States, and puts plans in motion to cause major death and destruction as he closes in on his prize.
Fox now has the rights to the comic, with Tony and Ridley’s Scott Free production company now looking for a writer to handle the script. However the film is still a ways off, with Deadline suggesting Scott is currently choosing between Potzdamer Platz, Hells Angels and The Associate as his next movie, with Nemesis coming later.
Since the news emerged, Millar has taken to his blog, saying, ‘Bryan Hitch and I would reference Tony on a weekly basis when we were doing The Ultimates. Our dream was an Ultimates movie with Scott directing because he can do the character work and the intensity, but also handle scale and action like practically no other. The idea of a him helming a superhero movie had us giddy and here he is directing the one Steve McNiven and I created.’
