Although it’s got some exciting plans for The Avengers, Marvel has a bit of a problem because it’s either already got films planned for its major superheroes, or the rights are owned by other companies (e.g. Spider-man and Fantastic Four). However Iron Man showed it’s not impossible to set up a major movie franchise based on a character not everybody knows, so what direction are they going to go in next?
Well, Marvel President Kevin Fiege has been talking to MTV, and told them, “I think what Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction have done with Iron Fist lately is exciting I think Black Panther and Wakanda has some amazing potential to be a feature film. Doctor Strange, as youve mentioned. There are some obscure titles, too, like Guardians of the Galaxy. I think theyve been revamped recently in a fun way in the book.”
Doctor Strange is already in development, with the men behind the Conan reboot, Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Openheimer, hired to come up with a script. However this is the the most concrete evidence we’ve had yet that Marvel is seriously thinking about Black Panther and Iron Fist, and they could be some of the lower budgeted movies the company is rumoured to be thinking about making, in order ot test audience interest in some of its lesser known heroes.
When asked about the S.H.I.E.L.D. film that Sam Jackson is insistent is going to happen, Fiege said “I think the answer [to ‘will there be a SHIELD movie] is yes I think S.H.I.E.L.D. could be its own franchise. I think, frankly, The Avengers is going to be told from that point of view more so than any of the other films at that point, so were going to get an inside look [at how S.H.I.E.L.D.] operates.”
So there you go, although it should be noted this is more Fiege speculating that talking about what definitely will happen. Although it certainly sounds as if Marvel wants to produce plenty more superhero movies after The Avengers.
