After several movies that have underperformed, Will Ferrell finally has a movie that looks like it’s on its way to being a hit, with The Other Guys. The buddy cop comedy, which also stars Mark Wahlberg, Sam Jackson and The Rock, took $35.6 million in its opening weekend, to top the US box office. That marks Ferrell’s biggest opening since Talladega Nights, and his second biggest ever. It was also the biggest opening for Wahlberg since Planet Of The Apes,
The only other new entry was Step Up 3D, which took $15.5 million to place third, behind Inception, which itself held up well to take another $18.6 million to take it well past the $200 million mark. With Step Up 3D, Disney is likely to see it as a disappointment, as despite the added bonus of 3D and premium prices for the tickets, it was a series low opening for the franchise.
While it’s on its fifth weekend in US cinemas, thanks to an expansion in the number of screens it’s playing in (as well as little depth in the box office), The Kids Are Alright made its first appearance in the Top 10. The film, starring Annette Being and Julianne Moore as lesbian mothers whose offspring (Mia Wasikowska) heads off to find her biological father, has found a lot of favour with the arthouse crowd and has now grossed $14 million, even though it only cost $4 million to make.
