There’s no one in the film world as secretive as JJ Abrams, to the point where you get the impression he’d prefer it is no information was released about his movies even when they’re in cinemas (which is kind of true, as even after the Abrams released Cloverfield came out, the press was banned from publishing images of the monster).
As a result, info on his upcoming project tends to happen through rumour and speculation until they’re officially confirmed, which is just what happened with his Spielberg collaboration, Super 8, before a trailer for that was released a few months ago and we officially knew it was happening.
Now a new rumour suggests he may be teaming up with a different director, Bong Joon-ho, director of the fabulous Korean monster movie, The Host. and the thriller, Mother. /Film reports that a source told them that Abrams visited Korea last year and had extensive meetings with Bong Joon-ho, and following that they’ll be collaborating on an as yet unnanounced movie. Bong will direct, with Abrams producing. The film is likely to made in Hollywood, rather than Korea.
With Abrams involvement in Cloverfield and Bong making The Host, the natural assumption is that the film could be a monster movie, but we’ll have to wait and see how this develops. Either way, Bong Joon-ho is a greta director who deserves more exposure, so hopefully Abrams will be the one to give it to him.
