Last year it was announced that the Weinstein brothers’ Dimension Films had purchased the remake rights to An American Werewolf In London. This news alone was enough to set off a firestorm of protest, with fans filling the internet with all sorts of choice workds about why the company behind the Halloween do-overs and the Scary Movie flicks shouldn’t touch the 1981 horror classic.
Since then there’s been little news on the remake plans, with many hoping that was because in the midst of financial difficulties, the Weinsteins had given up. But no such luck, as the LA Times reports that Fernley Phillips, who penned the Jim Carrey stinker The Number 23, has been hired to write the script.
The plan is to give the story a mondern spin and depart from the John Landis original, although there’s no news on what direction they’re going to take – however it sounds as if this will be yet another movie made to trade on a name, rather than offering anything worthwhile to the mix.
