Just a quick one to update a story that’s been unfolding over the last few days. Last week we reported that Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski was busy taking his sci-fi project Oblivion around to the studios, to see which one would bite, and yesterday we said that it looked like Disney was on the inside track and likely to buy the rights to the movie.
Well that’s now happened, with Deadline reporting that Disney has closed its deal to the film rights to Oblivion, which Kosinski has been working on for several years, and which he’s recently turned into an illustrated novel that will be released before the end of 2010 (you can ready the first chapter here).
Disney apparently paid in the mid-six figures for the project, against a seven-figure payday when the movie goes into production. They also added in riders that would sweeten things for Kosinski to potentially make a sequel to Tron Legacy, as they’re keen to make him one of the cornerstone directors. There’s no news on when Oblivion might be in theatres, and it will largely depend on what Kosinski decides to make next – Oblivion, a Tron Legacy sequel, or a remake of The Black Hole.
