For a while I thought I was the only person who likes G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, but Paramount is betting there are a lot more people out there who want to see a sequel, as despite many assuming the first one bombed, the studio is still developing a follow-up.
While not the smash hit the studio had hoped for, the first film nevertheless raked in over $300 million at the box office, and plans for the follow-up have moved forward, with the latest news being that Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) will return to direct G.I. Joe 2. That will surprise many as there were reports last summer of tension between Sommers and the studio, and that too many bridges may have been burned for him to return (it was alleged he wasn’t happy with the studio’s meddling with the G.I. Joe film), but nevertheless everyone seem happy enough now to get back together again.
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland) have been working on the script, with the studio apparently happy with their latest draft. There’s no news on when the film might go into production, but whenever it is, Channing Tatum is expected to return in the main role. (Source: The Wrap)
