Although it’s only a rumour at the moment, The Playlist is reporting that a very reliable source has revealed to them that Fox has narrowed down its choices for the man they want to direct Wolverine 2, and currently top of the list are Tony Scott and Matt Reeves.
Apparently Kathryn Bigelow, Timur Bekmambetov and Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash) talked to the studio about the gig, but it’s Scott or Reeves they want. Both are perhaps surprising choices, as Tony Scott may have directed a lot of big budget action movies, but he’s never made a comic book film, and nor has he jumped into a franchise partway through, barring Beverly Hills Cop 2 partway through his career. However, his films have underperformed in recent years, so perhaps he’s looking for something that feels like a sure-fire hit.
Reeves meanwhile had his pick of projects after Cloverfield, but instead of jumping straight into the big budget mainstream, he opted to direct the relatively small scale Let The Right One In remake, Let Me In, suggesting he was planning a directorial course away from merely being a director for hire. However he would make an interesting choice for Wolverine 2, and may be able to insert some of the character and mood that was missing from the first film.
At the moment Wolverine 2 is slated to start shooting in January, but that may pushed back, especially if Scott gets the gig, as that’s when he’s planning to make the movie Potsdamer Platz.
