Now that he’s no longer directing the Hobbit, Guillermo Del Toro is busy looking into all sorts of possibilities for new films, as well as those he’d put on the back burner while he was planning to go to Middle Earth. For example as we reported the other day, at Comic-Con it was announced that he was going to co-write and produce a movie based on the Haunted Mansion ride at the Disney parks.
While he was in San Diego, Del Toro also took time to mention another possibility, with Empire reporting that at the panel for the film Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark (which he produced), he spoke about his long-gestating version of Pinocchio. He revealed that not only is the idea still alive, kicking and already on the way in stop-motion form, but he’s got Nick Cave to provide the score. While Cave would seem the polar opposite of what you’d want for a re-telling Pinocchio, this is Del Toro we’re talking about.
Del Toro’s Pinocchio is planned as a darker story than you might expect, full of real mischief (although even the Disney version is pretty dark). The director also revealed that he’s fully committed to making his Frankenstein film, and wants to direct something involving vampires. While many had hoped he’d use Comic-Con to announce his next directorial effort, he wasn’t quite ready to do that, but he did say it would be revealed soon, and that it’d be a horror film that will start shooting next May.
