After he stepped away from Spider-man 4, many assumed that Sam Raimi would just fast-track development on his planned World Of Warcraft movie and make that next, but instead he’s kept that bubbling in the background while spreading his net a little wider for potential new directing projects.
He recently signed on to direct Oz: The Great And Powerful for Disney, and now THR reports that he’s preparing an adaptation of the three-issue comic series, Earp: Saints For Sinner, for DreamWorks, Radical Studios, Mandeville and Raimi’s own Star Road Entertainment. Raimi will both produce and direct the film, which is a complete reimagining of the Wyatt Earp legend, so that instead of the wild west, it’s set in the near future, with the lawman fighting outlaws “in a ravaged society where the only boomtown left is Las Vegas.”
The comic’s co-creator, Matt Cirulnick, will write the script.
It seems that at the moment Raimi will go to Oz next, with World Of Warcraft planned to go into production in a year or two. However it isn’t known quite where this one will fit. Indeed, it’s not known if this is planned as some sort of largel scale post-apocalytic western spectacle, or if Raimi’s thinking on a smaller scale, like he did with Drag Me To Hell. Either way, it’ll be the first time he’s approached anything close to a western since 1995’s Quick and the Dead.
