Let’s face it, Jim Carrey could do with a hit. The guy hasn’t has an unabashed success since Bruce Almighty in 2003 (not counting smaller successes like Eternal Sunshine). Even the $325 million gross of A Christmas Carol was seen as a flop, due to the fact it costr $200 million to make. Indeed his stock has sunk so low that several projects he’s been attached to have collapsed, purely because the money men weren’t convinced he was a name who could open a film anymore.
For quite a long time, he’s been trying to get a film called Pierre Pierre off the ground, about an obnoxious French nihilist who transports a stolen painting from Paris to London. At one point it was seen as a hot property, with Jason Reitman attached to direct, but then the company backing it, Fox Atomic, collapsed and its parent company cut the movie loose. Reitman of course abandoned Pierre Pierre and went off to make Up In The Air, but according to Deadline, the film isn’t completely dead and is now being given a bit of a boost with Carrey attaching Borat and Bruno director Larry Charles to helm the project.
As yet, Pierre Pierre hasn’t found financing, but the producers hope that with a budget only around the $20 million mark, they should be able to get the cash to actually be able to film Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton’s script, which is said to be a great showcase for Carrey’s physical comedy skills.
