While Howl got a great response when it debuted at Sundance in January, it’s still the sort of film that’s gonna be a tough sell, partly because not everyone has heard of Allan Ginsberg and also because the fact he was a bisexual poet will turn a lot of people off (the poet part more than the bisexual), whether it should or not. However while it’s yet to get a UK cinema release date, it’s pencilled in for September 24th in the US, and to try and get people interested – and to suggest it’s about more than just poetry – they’ve released a rather cool 60s-vibe trailer. The film focusses on the reaction to the publication of Ginsberg’s (played by James Franco) Howl, which is now considered amongst the greatest works of the beat generation, but at the time was the centre of an obscenity trial, much of which centred on the line “who let themselves be fucked in the ass by saintly motorcyclists, and screamed with joy”.
