Back in April it was revealed that filmmaker Andrew Niccol was busy setting up a new sci-fi film called Im.mortal, and that like his scripts for Truman Show, Gattaca and S1m0ne, it’s rather conceptual sci-fi. Now Variety is reporting that he’s found his lead actress in the the form of Amanda Seyfried.
Im.mortal is about a future society where the aging process stops at around the age of 25. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. The rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality. A poor rebel kills a sometone for their time and goes on the run from a corrupt police force known as ‘time keepers’, taking Amanda Seyfried’s character hostage. Inevitably though captor and captive start to fall for one another.
As yet the male lead hasn’t been cast, but as with pretty much everybody in the film, he’ll be in his mid-20s or younger, which should give the movie an interesting look. As Niccol says, ‘It’s a strange casting process. Even for a small role like a priest or a pawnbroker, where you would normally cast a 75-year-old character actor. I have to find a 75-year-old character actor in a 25-year-old body.”
Andrew Niccol is both writing and directing the movie, which begins shooting later this year.
