With Sony feeling they’re slightly lacking in blockbuster franchises, they’re keen to resurrect some oldies that they feel still have plenty of legs. As a result they’ve been busy for the last few months putting together a new Men In Black movie, and while there has been vague info that the villain will be called Yaz (played by Jermain Clement), and that the film will somehow involve time travel, we’ve known little more than that.
Now JoBlo has manged to get hold of a copy of the screenplay and revealed a few more details. (SPOILER ALERT) While there were rumours of multiple villains, it appears Yaz is the only real bad guy, who’s ‘described as a nightmare biker who looks like Dennis Hopper and Satan… oozing badassery and violence out of every pore.’ Admittedly that sounds more like Mickey Rourke than Flight Of The Conchords star Clement, but perhaps he can pull it off.
The main plot sees Agent Jay (Will Smith) sent back in time to 1969, where he teams up with a younger version of Agent Kay (Josh Brolin). They must stop Yaz from killing Kay, as if the alien manages that, it’ll set off a chain reaction that will end with the destruction of the world.
Inevitably the time travel device involves more celebrities, this time from the 60s, being revealed as aliens, including Yoko Ono, Jimi Hendrix, Fidel Castro and Andy Warhol. The last of those apparently has an extended cameo as he aids Jay and Kay on their mission.
Although JoBlo don’t seem to be overly amazed by the script, and even found some of it difficult to follow (although it’s unlikely they’ve got hold of the final version), they do seem to think it’s fairly funny, stays in the tradition of the other movies and should do pretty well. The film is currently set for a May 2012 release, so we’ll be able to see then whether this really was a franchise that’s was worth brining back.
