If you’re anything like me, you’ll have been slightly frustrated that your Facebook updates list keeps getting filled with notices that your friends have been doing things in the Mafia Wars game, as if it’s something I should care about (and to be honest, I’m even more perplexed by the need to tell me about the fake farms everyone seems obsessed with).
However it appears the popularity of Mafia Wars has piqued Hollywood’s interest, with Radar Pictures, the company behind the likes of The Box and All About Steve, taking on the challenge of trying to turn it into a movie. It’s early days yet, as Pajiba reports the project is currently only at the stage of looking for writers.
You can kind of understand why Tinsel Town might think a Mafia Wars game is a good idea, as apparently 25 million people play the Facebook App, which is kind of like a sims game for budding crime lords. With Farmville even more popular, don’t be shocked if it turns out in the bowels of some studio that’s being mulled over a movie as well. At the moment, anything with brand recognition is fair game in Hollywood, and that’s far more important to them than having a decent plot or reason to make a movie.
