For a few months now, Warner has been busy developing a Lego movie, keen to embrace the fad for making movies based on toys, even if those toys don’t offer much in the way of plot. Now it seems they’ve had a fairly smart idea, which is to hire the directors of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
Meatballs certainly did a good job of creating a world with unlikely events happening in it, which is just the sort of imagination needed if a live-action/CG mix Lego movie is ever going to work. THR, which reported the news of the directors being hired, doesn’t have much info on how the movie will work, although it wouldn’t be surprising if that’s because they haven’t really figured it out yet, with Lord and Miller coming onboard to both write the film and direct it, based a a pitch they made to Warner and Lego executives.
At the moment it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing a Lego movie anytime soon, as the directors are likely to make an adaptation of 21 Jump Street before helming a film based on the construction kits. It’s probably good they’ve got time, as you’ve got to imagine coming up with a decent story that makes sense, but based around Lego, won’t be the easiest of jobs.
