Pixar has topped the US box office again, with strong word of mouth ensuring plenty more business for Toy Story 3, with the film adding another $59 million to its tally over the weekend. Indeed it’s now the fastest animated film ever to pass $200 million, with the movie having the seventh highest 10-day gross in box office history, suggesting it could well become Pixar’s biggest film to date by the end of its run.
Toy Story 3’s continued success means the two big openers of the week had to settle for second and third place. Adam Sandler’s new comedy, Grown Ups, took a more than passable $41 million for second place, higher than most had expected.
However the new Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz movie, Knight & Day, opened to a less than enthusiastic $27.7 million since last Thursday, which wouldn’t be bad for most films, but is far less than would normally be expected for a Tom Cruise starring action film. It’s bound to make even more people wonder whether Cruise has lost his box office power, as he hasn’t had a true hit now since Mission: Impossible III in 2006. It’s little wonder he’s keen to get another Mission: Impossible movie under his belt as soon as possible.
