It seems that after making his name moving from being head writer on SNL to the director of the likes Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers and the upcoming The Other Guys (all starring Will Ferrell), Adam McKay is looking to stretch himself and head into comic book territory.
Both EW and Collider are reporting that McKay is in serious talks to direct the film version of Garth Ennis’ comic series, The Boys. Although McKay is only known for comedy, he’s a massive comic book fan and really wants direct something in that arena, and he now thinks he’s found the perfect project.
The Boys would certainly be something different for the director, with Sony planning an extremely violent flick, set in world much like our own, but in which certain people have superpowers. The Boys are a CIA squad of superpowered guys, whose job is to keep an eye on superheroes, and ensure they don’t abuse their position, intimidiating or killing them if necessary. In Watchmen, the slogan was ‘Who watches the Watchmen?’, well, The Boys is basically about a team whose job is to do just that.
At the moment McKay hasn’t signed a contract, but it seems he’s serious about the film. Let’s just pray he doesn’t insists on casting Will Ferrell in it.
