Toy Story 3 Leaps To The Top Of The US Box Office – Woody take $109 million while Jonah Hex sinks

20th June 2010 By Tim Isaac

While everyone expected Toy Story 3 to have a big opening weekend, it’s $109 million take in its first three days in the US is impressive by anyone’s measure. It’s the biggest ever opening in June and the largest for a G-Rated film.

However it didn’t manage to take the animated movie first weekend crown, which is still held by Shrek The Third, which took $121 million in its first three days in May 2007, although it did just outdo Shrek 2’s $108 million, which previously was the only other animated movie to open to more than $100 milion. It was also by far the biggest Pixar debut, topping The Incredibles $70.5 million.

There was only one other new entry in the top 10, with the critically mauled DC Comics movie Jonah Hex tanking with only $5 million, to place eighth on the list. The film has been plauged by problems and despite massive reshoots and a new director being brought in to supervise, the film couldn’t overcome its weaknesses and it seems audiences simply weren’t interested (which wasn’t helped by Warner seeming to realise it was on a hiding to nothing, and giving it only a half-hearted marketing push).

Elsewhere on the list, The Karate Kid continued to do well, take another $29 million to take it past the $100 million mark in only 10 days, which certainly isn’t bad for a movie many had few expectations for and which only cost $40 million to make.

The John C. Reilly and Jonah Hill movie Cyrus also got a limited release on only four screens, taking an impressive $180,000. It’s average of $45,000 per screen was by far the highest of the weekend, which suggests the comedy will do well as it expands onto more screens over the next few weeks.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of June 18th-20th.
