A crazed Japanese businessman and his power-hungry son will stop at nothing in order to take over the entire world, and to assist them in their quest for world domination, the villainous father/son duo employ the help of an army of robotic Geisha assassins. However, when one of their newest robo-recruits refuses to kill a group of innocents, she must do battle with the rest of the Geisha army in order to prevent her own extermination.
Written and directed by Noboru Iguchi of Machine Girl infamy, RoboGeisha offers more of the same anarchic, over-the -top action. Those familiar with the directors former work will already have an idea of what to expect, though for those stepping into Iguchis kamikaze world for the first time, its a place where convention, subtlety and rationality dont exist. Daft beyond belief and occasionally funny as hell, RoboGeisha is an excessively stupid action/adventure full of Loony Tunes violence and jaw-dropping action sequences that defy belief (one particular ass-kicking duo shoot ninja stars from their butts and acid from their breasts, and oh, did I mention killer socks?). But while the mind-boggling action sequences ensure that Iguchis latest is an absolute riot, theres far too much nonsense in between, with overlong scenes and trite dialogue interrupting the good stuff one too many times.
Robo-Geisha Trailer |
Though about 20 minutes too long, RoboGeisha is still a wickedly entertaining and utterly bonkers trip to the wackier side of Japanese cinema, and personally, I cant wait until Iguchis next insane outing, Mutant Girls Squad!
Overall Verdict: Flawed but utterly bonkers, and worth it for the action scenes alone.
