Sylvain Chomet beguiled the world a few years ago with the beautifully animated Belleville Rendez-vous, and now he’s back with The Illusionist, which is based on a screenplay the legendary comedy actor and director Jacques Tati wrote before he died. Tati seems to have channeled his own experiences into the film, as it’s about a magician whose brand of entertainment is being eclipsed by emerging rock stars and is forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theatres, garden parties and bars, However, whilst performing in a village pub off the west coast of Scotland, he encounters Alice, an innocent young girl who believes his tricks are real, and who will change his life forever. The film is currently scheduled for UK release on August 20th, but click below for the trailer.
