Today seems to be the day of film news about things that might be, but probably won’t. However according to Pajiba, a remake of the 1991 black comedy Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead is being developed by producer Mark Gordon.
If true, this really does seem like one of those projects that only exists because of Hollywood’s current obsession with looking for anything from the 80s and early 90s that teenagers might like and then remaking it. This is particularly true as the original Babysitter movie was very much a movie of its time and hardly warrants a do-over. The plot revolves around five kids who are left at home with a babysitter when their mother goes away for the summer.
However when the cruel woman who’s suppose to look after them quickly keels over, the kids dump the body at a funeral home and think they can have a summer of excess, with no adults and all the cash their mother left. Unfortunately for them, they discover the money was buried with the babysitter, which means they’re going to have to work if they want to survive. So it’s kind of a Home Alone rip-off with a slightly teen comedy bent.
The 1991 film was pretty implausible and not very good, and it’s difficult to imagine they’ll do better with a second go around. However with Hollywood obsessed with remakes, it wouldn’t be too shocking if this one goes get remade.
