After two weeks of sun, glamour and movies, the Cannes Film Festival has come to a close with the closing gala and the announcement of the festival’s prestigious awards. The top prize, the much coveted Palm d’Or, has gone to Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat).
The somewhat surreal film, where Uncle Boonmee does indeed recall his many past lives, impressed the judges with its heart and humour, and certainly suggests jury president Tim Burton might have had a big say in who won. Indeed he got some thanks from Weerasethakul when he picked up the Palm d’Or, as he commented “I’d like to thank the jury, particularly Tim Burton, whose haircut I really like,” while also remarking that winning was “surreal”.
Other prizes include the Grand Prix going to Xavier Beauvois’s Of Gods and Men, which is about Christian monks in North Africa in the 1990s dealing with the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. The Best Actor award was split between two winners, with Elio Germano honored for his work in Our Life, as was Javier Bardem for Biutiful. Best Actress went to Juliette Binoche for Certified Copy, while Mathiey Almaric picked up Best Director for On Tour.
