While Eddie Murphy is one of the most successful movie stars ever going by box office gross, that’s largely down to movies he made in the 80s and 90s, and for playing Donkey in the Shrek movies. Nowadays when he’s not a CG quadruped, audiences aren’t that interested, resulting in big flops like Meet Dave and Imagine That.
It seems he’s a bit desperate for a live action hit, as he revealed to Access Hollywood on the Red Carpet of the Shrek Forever After US premiere that, You know what, there might be another Nutty Professor… We kind of wrote something that might be kind of funny.
That’s a long way from saying the movie will get made, as it sounds at the moment the sequel is more hope than reality, with even Murphy uncertain about the whole thing, saying “If the studios want to do it, well do it. If you dont see it, the studio was like, This isnt funny.'” Well, fair enough I suppose.
It’s understandable that Murphy would want to revisit Nutty Professor, as the last time his career was in the doldrums, following the likes of Boomerang, The Distinguished Gentlemen and Vampire In Brooklyn, it was the fat suit comedy that pulled him back up onto the a-list.
As for his other rumoured venture back into glories past, Beverly Hills Cop IV, he merely says, I dont know, theyve been developing that Beverly Hills Cop [sequel] for years and years and years. I dont know what s going on with that.
