Just when it was looking like George A. Romero was going to merely try and milk his zombie movies for all they were worth for the rest of his life (there were reports last week he’s already got ideas for two more …Dead movies), it appears he is actually going to make something that doesn’t involve the killer ghouls.
Variety reports that the director is planning to remake Dario Argento’s 1976 supernatural thriller, Deep Red, in stereoscopic 3D. Romero and Argento are old friends, with Dario producing Dawn of The Dead, and the duo making the portmaneau movie Two Evil Eyes together in 1990. Now Romero is planning to take Dario’s story about a pianist who ends up investigating the murder of a psychic and soon finds himself mixed up in a seemingly other-worldly serial killing spree, and give it a bit of an update.
Considered one of the gems of Argento’s career, it’ll certainly be intriguing to see what Romero does with it, especially as the director hasn’t make a non-…Dead movie since 2000’s Bruiser. The script is being handled by Dario’s brother, Claudio, and the movie will start shooting this autumn.
