A new Judge Dredd movie is one of those things that’s been promised for so long, it sometimes seems they’re only keepting the idea alive to torture fans of the character. While the dreadful 1995 Stallone movie might have been the first and final nail in the coffin for Dredd on the silver screen, for the last few years people have been trying to get a reboot going, which will hopefully do justice to the character.
A few months ago it was rumoured that The Beach author Alex Garland was working on a Dredd script and that comic book artis Jock was coming up with concept art based on that. Now it look like the movie has taken another step towards cinemas, with Deadline reporting that Vantage Point’s Pete Travis has been hired to direct and a deal has been signed with Reliance Big Entertainment to fun the sub-$50 million budgeted film.
The potential 3D Judge Dredd movie will now be shopped to potential buyers at Cannes, with the hope that news it has financial backing to actually get made should ensure some juicy distribution deals, especially considering the potential commercial appeal.
