When they announced they were remaking Fright Night, possibly the last two names I expected to sign up to appear in it were Toni Collette and Colin Farrell. Comedy horror doesn’t really seem their style, but nevertheless the duo are now onboard the new version of the 1985 film.
The original Fright Night is about horror movie fan Charley Brewster (to be played by Anton Yelchin in the do-over), who becomes convinced that his new next door neighbour is a vampire. While he has trouble getting people to believe him, he enlists the help of veteran vampire movie star Peter Vincent to help him, who soon comes to realise that maybe Charley has a point.
THR reports that Farrell has nabbed the plum role of the vampire, Jerry, who seems like a cool guy but is actually preying on the neighbourhood, while Collette will be Charley’s mother, who initally disapporves of Jerry’s presence but soon falls under his magenetic spell and won’t believe what her son says about the new neighbour.
That leaves the Peter Vincent role open, but you’ve got to imagine they’ll be approaching a few horror veterans to put their tongue in their cheek for that one. Craig Gillespie is directing, with a release planned for next year.
