It was never in question that Iron Man 2 was going to have a big weekend during its first three days of release in the US. The only questions was just how big it would be. Some predictions even speculated that The Dark Knight’s $158 million opening weekend record was under threat. As it’s turned out, the Caped Crusader is still at the top of the tree, but $133 million in three days is still nothing to sniff at, making Iron Man 2 the fifth biggest opening ever in the US.
The film certainly gets the summer blockbuster season off to a good start, getting audiences ready for an almost weekly new mega-budget movie for the next couple of months, as the studios try to soak up the cash that always seems to be around in the early summer.
Elsewhere in the US top 10, A Nightmare On Elm Street suffered a massive 72% drop from last weekend, suggesting it’s suffering from bad word of mouth and won’t find sustained success in cinemas. How To Train Your Dragon has more to celebrate, as its third place $6.7 million weekend took it past the $200 million mark at the American box office.
The only new entry, other than Iron Man 2, was the documentary Babies, which looks at the first year in the life of four babies from very different parts of the world from Mongolia to America. The film’s $1.5 million marks a rare top 10 finish for a documentary.
