Although it’s looked likely for a while, Sony has now confirmed that all the pieces are coming together and they’re going ahead with Men In Black III. Until recently, the biggest sticking point was that while Will Smith was committed in principle, he hadn’t signed a deal and there were rumours he was torn between donning the suit and sunglasses again or making a film called The City That Sailed.
However it may be that he can do both, as while many had thought the studio would try and rush things through in order to release MiB III in the summer of 2011, with Deadline reporting that they’ve now set a release date for the film of May 25th, 2012 (in the US, although expect it over here as well), perhaps biving Big Willy a chance to make City That Sailed as well. Indeed, Smith’s deal didn’t just rest on him approving the script, but getting a release date he approved of, with the star wanting the Memorial Day weekend the studio has now given him.
However Tommy Lee Jones hasn’t signed his deal yet, although he’s expected to, while the long rumoured Josh Brolin is also being pinned down at the moment (it appears he will, as many suggested, be playing a younger version of Jones’ character). Barry Sonnenfeld will once more be directing, and inevitably it’ll be made in 3D.
