At the moment it’s only a rumour (although a relatively sound one), but it seems there are already plans in place to shoot a sequel to Kick-Ass next year, for cinema release in 2012. Forces Of Geek uncovered the news in a press release for the new CLiNT magazaine, which is a joint venture between Titan and Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar.
The comic book mag is aimed at 16-30 year old guys, and will be an anthology featuring the work of Millar and others. However the bit that’s most intriguing is what it has to say about Kick-Ass. It says, ‘Millar is also launching his sequel to the hit Kick-Ass movie in the first issue of the comic. Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall has been scheduled for production in 2011 for a 2012 cinema release.’
However it should be noted that while that’s what’s ‘scheduled’, it doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what will happen. It will all depend on the final bottom line for the first film. If that movie makes a sufficient amount of money, a sequel is a real possibility, but it will all depend of cast commitments, and most importantly financing. The first film was put together independently, but depending on the distribution deals done, Lionsgate could own sequel rights.
It’s also true that Matthew Vaughn is tied up making X-Men: First Class for release next summer, so any sequel is unlikely to shoot before July 2011. That said, Millar has been talking recently about directing, so maybe he’ll want to take on the job himself.
