Ice Age 3 was the movie that really showed the studios the power of 3D to boost box office (which was of course cemented by Avatar). After the second Ice Age flick, the franchise was still popular but it seemed to be waning. Then Dawn Of The Dinosaurs opened last year, in three dimensions, and didn’t just conquer the box office, it slayed it.
The film’s final tally was $894 million, putting it in the top 20 movies ever released. That means it made more money than anything Pixar has released. It was the third highest grossing movie of 2009, grossing more than even the behomoth that was Transformers 2. As a result, it was only a matter of time before Fox announced they were making Ice Age 4, and now that time is here.
Variety reports that the movie will be probably be subtitled Continental Drift (although that’s still a tentative name) and will hit cinemas on July 13th, 2012. Unsurprisingly it too will be in 3D.
There’s no news on a plot, although it’s safe to say Sid will do something loveable but dumb that gets everyone in trouble, while Scrat yet again tries to secure his beloved acorn.
