Casting Notes: Jon Hamm Joins Wiig’s Wedding – Plus, Jamie Kennedy may be in Transformers 3, new cast for The Big Year and loads more…

4th May 2010 By Tim Isaac

Here’s the latest casting new coming out of Hollywood…

Mad Men star Jon Hamm has lined up a new movie role, starring in Kristen Wiig’s currently untitled comedy (once known as Bridesmaids), about a group of female friends who all want to hold their friend (Maya Rudolph)’s bridal shower. Wiig’s playing the maid of honour, who faces challenges from other wedding party members, such as Rose Byrne. Along with Hamm, Dianne Wiest and Matt Lucas have also apparently snatched roles in the movie. Paul Fieg is directing. (Source: Twitter)

Although it’s currently unconfirmed, it seems both Patrick Dempsey and Jamie Kennedy may be joining the cast of Transformers 3, which is due to go into production soon. The Dempsey news comes via an interview with a Brazilian website where he said, “I start filming later this month on Transformers 3, in which I play a character who is far more “dark” than others.” Meanwhile Scream star Jamie Kennedy is reported to be appearing by tfw2005, who caught an interview with the actor on an Arizonan radio station, where he said “I had an interesting interview with the people behind the new Transformers movie and I may have a role in the movie” (Via: /Film)

The cast of the birdwatching comedy The Big Year has expanded significantly with Rashida Jones, Anjelica Huston, Jim Parsons, Rosamund Pike, JoBeth Williams, Brian Dennehy, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Anderson and Tim Blake Nelson joining the previously announced Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Steven Martin. That’s a hell of a cast for the film, based on Mark Obmascik’s book about three men trying to outdo each other during a year long competition to find the rarest birds in North America. A cast like this suggests a lot of these famous faces will be dropping in for cameos as the main cast go from place to place looking for birds. Shooting on the David Franckel movie has just begun. The supernatural thriller The Rite, starring Anthony Hopkins and Colin O’Donoghue, has added a few more cast members, including Alice Braga, Ciaran hinds and Toby Jones. Mikael Hafstrom’s (1408) film is based on a true story of an American who heads to the exorcism school at the Vatican and regains his faith through his encounters with demons. (Source: Screen Daily)

Brendan Gleeson has joined the cast of Simon Wincer’s The Cup, a film about the 2002 Melbourne Cup horse race, which begins filming this summer in Australia. He will play legendary Irish horse trainer Dermot Weld, the only foreigner ever to claim the cup. The movie will presumably focus on the struggle of both the winning horse, Media Puzzle, and his jockey, Damien Oliver, whose brother had died in a track accident just before the race.
