When Sony started working on Men In Black 3 last year, one question everyone kept asking was whether Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones would return. Neither was under contract for another sequel, and as a result rumours swirled that Jones was too old and not all that interested, and that he may be replaced by a younger agent (poosibly played by Josh Brolin).
Smith’s been attached to the film for a while but even so there were rumours he was only mildly interested and was merely keeping his hat in the ring so he could see the script and then decide. However it was all pure speculation, as both Jones and Smith’s camp said very little officially.
However now director Barry Sonnenfeld has confirmed to Showbiz 411 that both of franchise’s main stars will indeed be back for more Men In Black shenanigans. It seems the only thing everyone is waiting on now is for the script to be finalised, and then Sony will give project the greenlight. The studio is keen to get things moving asap, as they’re down a blockbuster next year due to Spider-man 4 falling to bits, and want to slide MiB 3 into their 2011 summer schedule. However if they’re going to do that, they need to start shooting the movie fairly soon.
Sonnenfeld also says the movie will be in 3D, but that can barely be counted as news, because everything’s in 3D nowadays. Nothing is known about the plot of Men In Black 3 as yet, although expect to hear more soon if Sony does decide to continue with its plan to rush the film into production.
