Stephen Frears is not normally a director you associate with comic book films, but then Tarama Drewe isn’t your normal comic book movie. After all, there aren’t that many graphic novel adaptations that have been invited to show out of competition at Cannes.
Tamara Drewe, by Posy Simmonds, is a modern reimaging of Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd, in which sexy flirt Drewe returns to her small country village after completely transforming herself through plastic surgery and a new look. She stirs up dark passions amongst the locals which leads to tragedy. See, not an alien in sight. And just to show how sexy she becomes, the first pic of Gemma Arterton in the title role has been released over at the film’s Facebook page, with the Clash Of The Titans actress looking rather slinky as she leans against a stile (which is pretty much all people do in the countryside).
Tamara Drew is showing at Cannes in May, and is currently scheduled for release in the UK on September 10th.
