I’m starting to feel that Cameron’s Diaz’s relationships with men have left her feeling a little bit twisted. She’s recently been filming Bad Teacher, in which she plays a foul-mouthed, unpleasant women obsessed with snagging her dream man, and now it’s been announced she’s attached to a movie about a woman who wants a divorce, but decides to set her hubby up with a new bride beforehand, so she can get out of paying alimony. Cameron seems to have a problem with conventional relationships and also appears to believe women are complete bitches.
Deadline reports that the film, A Ex To Grind, is being backed by Fox and will be based on Jane Heller’s novel. Del Toro will play a star athlete who for years supports the dreams of his waitress wife (Diaz). However, his career is cut short by injury and as a result he turns into a beer-swilling couch potato while she becomes a big success in business. She decides she want to divorce him and is horrified to discover she will have to pay alimony to maintain the slovenly lifestyle that led her to dump him. She conspires to find him a new wife to get herself off the hook, but when her replacement restores the man she fell for, the ex wants him back.
It’s the sort of thing that could be interestingly edgy, but will inevitably turn out hackneyed and predictable. It’s also true that with a plot like that, it could also have a slightly nasty undertone to it, which seems to be the mode for rom-coms these days. An Ex To Grind is still in farily early development, so if it does excite you, you may have to wait a while before it appears in cinemas.
