The line-up for this year’s Cannes Film Festival was announced at a press conference this morning, revealing which movies will be in competition and what else will be screened at cinema’s premiere festival shindig. As normal, the movies in competition are mix of new films from well known names, along with other lesser known directors who’ve made some arthouse treats.
Britain will be represented by Mike Leigh’s Another Year, while Takeshi Kitano has Outrage, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu premieres Biutiful and Doug Liman presents Fair Game (about the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame), all of which will be going for the Palm D’or. In total there are 16 films in competition, from 13 counties.
However as often happens, the biggest movies are showing out of competition, with Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood opening the festival on May 12th (as previously announced), while Woody Allen will show You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, Stephen Frears is premiering his graphic novel inspired Tamara Drewe, and Oliver Stone will present Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (it’s believed Fox delayed the release of the film, specifically so they could get the Cannes slot). All this should ensure there’s plenty of star power gracing the red carpet.
There’s also a chance Terrence Malick’s Brad Pitt starring Tree Of Life will show out of competition, but it depends whether the director finishes it in time.
The Cannes press conference was slightly marred by the lack of journalists from Reuters, Getty Images, the AFP and AP, who boycotted the event due to the festival organisers signing a video exclusivity contract with Cannes’ media sponsors, Canal Plus and Orange. The agencies believe this will severely restrict their freedom to cover the festival. Moves are afoot to make sure all parties are happy before next month’s two-week event kicks off, although if problems aren’t sorted, those agencies won’t attend the festival either.
Take a look below for the full list of Cannes Film Festival movies, plus the full juries for the prizes, announced this morning. The festival itself runs from May 12th-23rd.
