Hollywood loves unecessary sequels and will contrive one if they smell even the tiniest hint of cash to be made. This can be the only reason why Gold Circle is planning a follow-up to last year’s ‘based on a true story’ horror flick, The Haunting In Connecticut, which starred Virgina Madsen and Kyle Gallner.
To prove Connecticut isn’t the only state in which hauntings of dubious authenticity can take place, this one is imaginatively called A Haunting in Georgia. Oh, and just to make the whole thing sound even more like a cheap cash-in, THR reports that the editor of the first film, Tom Elkins, will be sitting in the director’s chair for the follow-up.
The sequel centres on the ‘true story’ of a young family imperiled by mysterious entities inhabiting their property in the rural South, although little more is known about it than that (actually, there probably isn’t that much more to know, as these things are pretty predicatable). Is it just me, or is everyone else getting fed up with these ‘based on a true story yarns’, which are so over the top that even if there’s the vaguest hint of truth behind them, it’s been swallowed up by Hollywood nonsense?
You can see why Gold Circle might want a sequel, as the original cost little to make, grossed $55 million (with a $23 million opening weeked) in the US and cleaned up on DVD, and there’s no reason to think another one won’t do the same.
