As the writer/director of Gattaca and Lord Of War, as well as screenwriter of The Truman Show, I’ve always felt Andrew Niccol is someone it’s worth keeping an eye on, as he’s one of the few people out there trying to make commercial flicks with a really interesting philosophical bent. As a result, it’s good to hear (via THR) that New Regency is in negotiations to pick up his latest script, I’m.mortal.
As with Gattaca and The Truman Show, it’s a sci-fi flick that sets up a series of interesting moral question. According to THR, ‘The story is set in the not-too-distant future where the aging gene has been switched off. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. The rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality. The protagonist is a poor young man who comes into a fortune of time, though too late to help his mother from dying. He ends up on the run from a corrupt police force known as time keepers.’
It should also have an interesting look, as because of the lack of aging, everyone will look incredibly young, so that parents will appear to be the same age as their young-adult children. Niccol is also attached to direct the movie, and hopes to start shooting this summer.
Insiders says it’s Niccol’s most commercial script yet, and the Logan’s Run-ish themes are certainly intriguing.
