Vera Farmiga is certainly capitalising on her newfound status in Hollywood following Up In The Air. She’s already signed up for Henry’s Crime, Duncan Jones’ Source Code and Madonna’s W.E., and now Production Weekly has tweeted that she’s decided to use her clout to become a director, saying ‘Vera Farmiga will star & direct the indie Higher Ground, based on Carolyn Briggs’ memoir This Dark World, filming in Upstate NY begins June.’
Briggs’ book looksat how she became a teenage mom in the American midwest, got married and had few plans beyond having more kids. Then she started getting religious, which grew from watching televangelists to embracing a radical, apocalytic New Testament church. However, while for years she wholeheartedly believed in this extreme take on Christ, when her marriage began to unravel she started question the dogma she’d previously held so dear.
It could certainly make for an interesting flick, although it has to be said that Farmiga has chosen a difficult subject for her directorial debut, both emotionally and in subject matter.
