For a while now, it’s seemed like commercials director Carl Erik Rinsch has been on the verge of breaking into movie in a big way. He was announced for the Alien prequel before Ridley Scott took over, and since then he’s been attached to a remake of The Creature From The Black Lagoon and a Keanu Reeves movie called 47 Ronin. Now a short film he’s made called The Gift (which you can watch below), about a robot manservant on the run from the Russian police, has several studios interested in a film version.
The Gift was made as part of electronic giant Phillips’ short-film experiment, Parallel Lines, which allowed five filmmakers to make their own movie using the same piece of dialogue. The short was released on Wednesday and THR reports that almost immediately a bidding war broke out between several studios, including Warner and Fox, over a feature film version. They speculate Fox is the most likely home, as Rinch is Ridley Scott’s protege and that’s where the Gladiator director is based.
However, whichever studio ends up with the right, click below to watch The Gift and see what they’re all getting so excited about.
