With 3D suddenly becoming a big deal, it’s little wonder many people in Hollywood’s minds have turned to sharks, as the creatures zooming through the water would seem perfect for the format. Russell Mulcahy is already planning Bait 3D, in which sharks kill people in a flooded supermarket (no, really, that’s the plot), and now The Final Destination director David R. Ellis is getting in on the act with Shark Night 3D.
Deadline says it’s a ‘film its makers hope will be Jaws for the 3D generation’. Somehow though, I think Spielberg’s flick is safely going to retain its title of king of the shark movies, despite the fact we know little about the plot of Shark Night.
Ellis would seem a good bet for the film though, as while The Final Destination was pretty rubbish, it was shot in 3D, and the early racing sequence showed he can use the extra dimension effectively (even if he forgot for the rest of the movie). He’s also been the second unit director on the likes of The Perfect Storm and Deep Blue Sea, meaning he knows what to do around water (and sharks with the latter), and as a former stunt co-ordinator, he can cerntaingly handle the action.
The makers have also signed up Walt Conti, the animatronics expert who created the sharks for Deep Blue Sea and the giant snake for Anaconda, although it’s safe to presume there’ll be plenty of CG cartilaginous fishies as well.
Ellis is obviously planning to be busy, as only last week he also signed up for Bad Luck, a horror flick about superstitions, although there’s no news on which of these film might shoot first.
