It was another big weekend for Alice In Wonderland, topping the US box office for the third time, adding another $34.5 million to take its North American total to $265 million. In the rest of the world it surged past $300 million, mean that after only three weeks it’s nearing the $600 million mark, proving once again that audiences are currently nutty about 3D.
The next three places on the US box office chart was taken up with new movies. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid outperformed expectations to come second with a strong opening of $21.8 million, which was far more than was expected for the family flick. Next on the list was Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston action comedy, The Bounty Hunter, taking a decent $21 million despite terrible reviews.
Unfortunately for the sci-fi thriller Repo Men, while it took enough to reach fourth place on the box office list, with a first weekend haul of only $6.1 million it made even less than the already weak expectations, taking only $6.1 million. It’s the third underperforming movie in a row for Universal after last week’s release of Green Zone (which dropped 60% this weekend, dashing any hopes that strong word of mouth would save it from box office ruin) and last month’s The Wolfman. As Universal has been plagued by failures for the last couple of years, it’s likely to put yet more pressure on the studio brass to start producing hits.
