Somehow I’m having difficulty imagining Reese Witherspoon as a cattle rancher, but it looks like it’s going to happen, as Deadline reports that Sony has made a deal to develop The Pioneer Woman as a star vehicle for Witherspoon.
It’s another attempt to turn a popular blog into a movie, although unlike several others that Hollywood has attempted to bring to the big screen, this one is written by a woman who’s life already sounds like a film. The blog, The PioneerWoman.com, by Ree Drummond, details how a detour on a trip from LA to Chicago led her to Oklahoma. There, she met the cowboy of her dreams and had to adapt from being a spoiled city girl to a domestic ranch wife.
It’s also part cookbook (a book of Drummond’s recipes have already been published) and part novel (she’s written the story of how she got to the ranch like a book, which you can read here, and it’ll be published next year) as well as detailing the day-to-day life of herself, her husband and her kids on their farm.
It certainly sounds like it could make a decent movie, with Witherspoon going back to some of the comic ideas of Sweet Home Alabama. She could certainly do with a hit, so maybe The Pioneer Woman will provide it.
