Purely by creating The Sopranos, David Chase is treated as a legend in some circles, but since that show came to an end he’s been notable by his absense from either the big or the small screen. However, now Deadline has learned that he’s planning to go into production this summer on a film that couldn’t be further from the Mafia.
The currently untitled film is described “as a music-driven coming-of-age saga for Paramount about a bunch of guys who form a rock band in the 1960s.” Chase has certainly taken his time, as he signed up with the studio two years ago to make a movie, and it’s only now coming together. As the plotline sounds fairly generic, hopefully he’ll be able to do the same as he did with Sopranos, and take a standard set-up and make it feel fresh and incredibly vital.
The movie will also be Chase’s directing debut, but as yet there’s no cast been announced. Many will be upset that it isn’t a Sopranos movie, but you can’t have everything in life.
Chase is also currently busy working on a mini-series called Ribbon Of Dreams, about the birth of Hollywood from 1913 onwards, which if it comes together will follow two men from those earliest days right up to the present, showing how cinema has changed over the years. It’s massive in scope and would be incredibly expensive, but could be a real TV event if it does actually get made.
